How to Brush Your Teeth with Traditional Braces

Posted on 1/24/2022 by SRD Tuscumbia
How to Brush Your Teeth with Traditional BracesIf you have to correct a bite problem with traditional braces, you will need to brush your teeth just as often, if not more frequently, than you usually do teeth without braces. Let us explain the best routines.

Brushing Your Teeth with Braces

The best and most efficient way to brush teeth with braces is to begin with an electric or sonic toothbrush with a soft round bristle-brush. You can still brush with a manual toothbrush. However, a toothbrush that runs on electricity, or which is sonic-powered, makes navigating the brush easier. Begin by removing the bands or elastics, or any removable orthodontic parts first. A round electric or sonic toothbrush will assist you in carefully cleaning around pins and wires. Make sure to brush each wire, from top to bottom, and around both upper and lower teeth.

How Long Should I Brush?

We recommend you take 2 minutes, twice a day. Therefore, you should brush each quadrant of the mouth for 30 seconds each. Some well-known electric toothbrush brands, such as Oral-B, feature advances, such as 3D Tracking and A1 Recognition. These add-ons ensure that you are covering all areas of the mouth. Once you finish brushing, rinse your mouth completely. Check your teeth and braces in the mirror to make sure you did not leave any food residue or debris.

Flossing the Teeth

Besides brushing, you also need to learn to floss. Do this once a day, using waxed floss. You do not want to use unwaxed floss, as it is more likely to shred. Thread the floss carefully beneath the main wire before passing it between the first 2 teeth, moving the thread gently up and down. Remove the floss and go onto the next 2 teeth. If you are not sure how to brush or floss with braces, we can give you tips and show you the correct methods during your orthodontic appointment.

You need to see us regularly for check-ups and adjustments. Doing so will keep you on track with respect to tooth straightening and your goals for completing your treatment plan. Call us any time to set up an exam and consultation.
