What We Look For During an Oral Cancer Screening

Posted on 4/12/2021 by SRD Tuscumbia
What We Look For During an Oral Cancer ScreeningOral cancer is a widespread disease, and people who consume alcohol or tobacco products and smoke regularly are most likely to get it. However, you may get the disease even if you do not partake in these activities. This is largely due to a variety of other factors, such as genetics. Regular oral check-ups are recommended in order to trace the disease in its early stages and treat it before the patient's conditions worsen. During an oral cancer screening, our dentists look for abnormal cell activity in your mouth, and if identified, further tests are carried out to confirm whether the patient indeed has oral cancer.

What We Look For

During an oral cancer screening, the signs that we typically look for while inspecting your mouth are patches of red or white, or open sores inside your mouth. We also physically feel if there are any abnormal lumps in your mouth, tongue, or throat. If any of these are located, you will then be directed for a biopsy to confirm your condition. In some cases, an additional dye or light test may be required during the screening.

When Should You Visit The Dentist

Although regular check-ups are crucial for the efficient treatment of oral cancer, many people fail to attend oral examinations regularly. However, there are a few symptoms that you should look out for to indicate oral cancer. If you frequently experience ear or mouth pains, have sore and colored patches on your lips or inside your mouth which do not heal naturally, have difficulty in swallowing food or even drinking, or feel a lump inside your mouth, you should pay us a visit immediately. Other signs include loosened teeth, bad breath, mouth ulcers, and frequent and painful coughs. Contact our office to learn more about oral cancer and schedule an appointment with our dentist today.
