What Are The Causes Of Sudden Tooth Sensitivity?
If you grind your teeth when you are sleeping, this can bring on toothache the next day. Grinding your teeth can be caused by stress or frustration or by a jaw misalignment. If the problem persists, we may give you a tooth guard to wear at night to protect your teeth. Another common cause of sensitivity is a fractured tooth. A crack that is so small that it can hardly be seen is capable of causing a lot of discomfort. Treatment may consist of bonding, the fitting of a crown or, in more serious cases, a root canal filling.
Don't forget that, if left to themselves, small cracks will grow larger. A third cause of sudden sensitivity is tooth decay. Acidic bacteria can erode the tooth enamel. If we spot the decay early enough, we may be able to apply a sealant solution which will halt the decay. Where the enamel has been eroded too badly, a filling will be needed. Another cause of sensitivity can be receding gums. The gums pull away from the teeth, causing the top part of the root to be exposed. As the root is not protected by enamel, it will be more sensitive. Gums may recede with age or they may be worn away by brushing too aggressively. If the gums become painful and enlarged, this is a sign of a gum disease such as gingivitis.
