Cracked teeth can be an issue for adults. The older you get, the more you have put your teeth through, and the more likely you are to damage one. However, depending on their location and the severity of the crack, there are solutions to cracked teeth.
Why Do Teeth Crack?
The enamel that surrounds your teeth is very strong. It is the strongest substance your body makes. But over time, you can wear down your tooth enamel, and if you are not working on remineralizing your teeth with fluoride and toothpaste, your enamel can crack. People in midlife and later are more likely to crack their teeth because their teeth usually have more wear and tear. You can also crack your teeth through trauma to your mouth, such as biting down on something hard.
How Can I Tell if My Tooth Is Cracked?
You may not be able to tell whether your tooth is cracked at all, especially if the crack occurs in one of your back teeth. However, if you think you have cracked one of your front teeth or one that you can see easily, you can look in the mirror. You may see a thin line on your tooth that you cannot brush away. That may be a crack in your tooth.
Cracked Teeth Repair
If you suspect you have a cracked tooth, you will want to make an appointment to come see our dentist. If the crack is small and thin, dentists can usually repair it with dental bonding. Dental bonding is a plastic resin that is the same color as your tooth. Our dentist can place the bonding material over the crack and then harden it with a light. The bonding agent seals and hardens over the crack, which usually eliminates the problem. If the crack is severe, however, you may need a dental crown over your tooth instead of bonding.
The only way to know for sure whether your tooth is cracked and what our dentist can do to repair the crack is to make an appointment to come into our office. The sooner you make your appointment, the more quickly your cracked tooth can be repaired.
