How Old Are Children When They Begin to Lose Teeth?

Posted on 5/1/2024 by SRD Tuscumbia

a mom in the bathroom with kids brushing teeth inspecting a clean smileRemember when you could not wait for that first baby tooth to come in? The years have flown by, and now your school-aged child may be preparing to lose their first tooth. For both children and parents, your grown baby losing a tooth is very exciting. Here are some guidelines that demonstrate when you might expect your child to begin losing their teeth.

The Tooth Order

Just as the baby teeth erupted in a particular order, the teeth will fall out in an order as well. Usually, the first teeth your child will lose will be the lower central incisors in the middle of their mouth. Most children begin to lose baby teeth around the age of six. However, your child may lose their first baby tooth before they turn six or right before they turn eight. If your child did not cut their first tooth until they were past a year old, they may not begin to lose their teeth until later as well.

After your baby loses all of their incisors, the canine or cuspid teeth are shed, followed by the baby molars. Those final baby teeth may not come out until your child is in middle school.

How Do Children Lose Their Teeth in the First Place?

When it is time for your child to begin losing their teeth, their body will begin the process of breaking down the tooth roots that hold their teeth in the jawbone. The tooth root grows shorter and shorter until it disappears entirely, and the tooth falls out.

When Should I Worry About My Child Losing Teeth?

Even though there is a timetable for tooth loss, dentists see children who have lost teeth as young as four years old or as old as eight or nine. If you are worried about the tooth loss your child is experiencing or has not experienced yet, why not bring them in to see our dentist? The dentist can take X-rays and determine if the teeth are growing and developing as they should. Why not give us a call today to make an appointment?
