I Think I Might Have a Chipped Tooth

Posted on 2/15/2024 by Weo Admin
ChippedTooth-831667786.jpgAdults go through their lives thinking their teeth are indestructible, and in many cases, your teeth are exactly like that. However, people can chip teeth at any time. If you are concerned you have a chipped tooth, here is some information about identifying and fixing those chipped teeth.

What Does It Mean To Have a Chipped Tooth?

Usually, a chipped tooth means that you have broken a tiny bit of your tooth enamel. The tooth enamel is the white, hard substance that covers your tooth and makes it shiny; it protects the interior of the tooth (pulp). While you might assume the front teeth are chipped most often, most adults chip their molars more than any other teeth because they are used for crushing and grinding food.

What Causes Chipped Teeth?

As adults age, they are more likely to chip their teeth because all of us lose tooth enamel the older we get. You might also chip your teeth if you play a sport or if you have an accident. Over 20 percent of all sports injuries are to the head or the face, according to the American Dental Association. Sometimes, you can chip a tooth because you bite down on something hard, such as hard candy or a pretzel. Tooth decay can cause chipped teeth as well because cavities weaken tooth enamel.

Treatment For Chipped Teeth

Chipped teeth are usually easy to fix. The smaller the chip, the easier it is to fix. Usually, our dentists can fix a chipped tooth quite easily with bonding material. Bonding is usually made of a plastic resin that dries quickly and is the same color as your natural tooth. Dentists apply the bonding to your tooth and then use a light to harden the bonding.

If you have several chipped teeth, you may want to think about veneers. Dentists can place veneers over all of your teeth in your top or bottom jaw and cover any chips, cracks, or broken teeth all at one time. Your teeth will look pristine after veneers are placed.
